Adult and Youth Music Opportunities

There are music opportunities for absolutely everyone. We have Choirs for all ages and handbell groups for grades 3 and up. We invite you to share your skills or just your love of music by participating in one of our offerings. It's a great way to get plugged in, meet new people with your interests and give back at the same time.

Please call me with any questions and I'll help to get you involved in Northwood's church family.

Children's Choirs

Northwood Presbyterian Church has an active and thriving Children's Music program. There are 3 graded choirs (listed below) which meet on Wednesday afternoons as part of the children’s ministry “King’s Kids.” You may choose to do choir only if that is all your schedule permits, or you may participate in all of the 4:00-6:00 activities including Bible study, crafts, recreation, snack and choir. The children generally sing the last Sunday of every month and alternate services throughout the year. There is no cost involved - just come to the choir room at the appropriate time.

Cherub Choir - Ages 3-4

The Cherub Choir meets on Wednesdays from 4:00-4:30. We sit in a circle on the floor while we sing and learn songs to sing in church. We also play rhythm sticks, jingles, drums, resonator bars, move with hoops and scarves and do fun circle dances. It's based on the 'Musikgarten' curriculum called "God's Children Sing". We work on using our voices, steady beat, movement, lots of hands-on, following rules, and having fun!

Seraph Choir - Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

The Seraph Choir meets on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:00. These children no longer sit in a circle on the floor as the above group. We're now in chairs and do fun vocal warm-ups and learn basic choral techniques. We will work on learning an anthem to sing in church and often play Orff instruments, such as xylophones, glockenspiels and percussion instruments. The children can earn a treat each Wednesday by moving up the "Rehearsal-ometer." What's that? Come and find out!

Angel Choir - 3rd to 5th Grades

The Angel Choir meets on Wednesday from 5:00-6:00. This group continues with vocal warm-ups, extending vocal range and improving tone quality. They learn anthems to sing in the worship services and also learn a Christmas and Spring musical, complete with choreography and drama. In the spring, we attend an overnight choral festival where we'll sing with about 200 other children and they'll have opportunities to play handbells, chimes, Orff instruments, and participate in drama, sign language, interpretive dance and more! This group also earns a treat each week and can earn trips to the treasure chest. Come and give it a try!

Celestial Bells and Orff (3rd-5th grade)

This special group meets on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. We generally spend a ½ hour ringing handbells. You may ask, "What if I can't do it?" My answer is: “Anyone can do it! I'll teach you the basics and it's loads of fun.” During the other ½ hour we play Orff instruments: xylophones, glockenspiels, metallophones, drums, and many other unpitched percussion instruments. We work on rhythms and making music totally hands-on! This group plays in church every 6-8 weeks.

Summer Music Camp

Northwood provides a Summer Music Camp during the last week in July for children who have just completed 2nd grade through those who have just completed 5th grade. The children learn a full-length musical with choreography and drama during the week and perform it for the public on Friday evening. It’s an exciting week of singing, musical games, drama, and fun! Registration begins in June during Vacation Bible School week and space is limited, so availability is on a first come, first served basis.

Youth Choirs

Westminster Choir & Bells- Youth (Middle & High School)

This is the youth choir and handbell group for grade 6-college. We meet Wednesday afternoons in the sanctuary for choir, and choir room for handbell practice. The schedule is as follows: 5-5:25 - musical rehearsal; 5:25-5:50 -choir rehearsal; 5:50-6:30 handbell rehearsal. If you want to be in the musical you must also participate in choir, but handbells may be joined without participation in the choirs. We meet Wednesday afternoon from 5-6:30 in the sanctuary for choir and choir room for handbells. They perform in church every 4-6 weeks.

Adult Choirs

Chancel Choir - Adult

Chancel Choir is the adult choir which sings in both traditional services on Sunday mornings. This group leads in worship by singing hymns and anthems. Anyone high school age and up is welcome to join us. We learn 4-part music from the classical era to beautifully written anthems of today. We have singers who can read music and those who can't, but all love to sing! Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 (except when we have Wednesday night dinners and practice is 7:30-9:00) Rehearsals often begin in sectionals to work on notes and then we join forces to make beautiful music together. Some members sing in one service and some sing in both (the choir leaves after the anthem in the 11:00 service for those doing double duty). We learn a cantata to be sung in service twice a year. Opportunities are there for music retreats with clinicians. It's a time of fellowship and a great way to give back to your church while doing something that you love.

Celebration Ringers

This is the beginner/intermediate handbell group. Some members have played for many years and some are brand new readers. We learn level 2-3 music and ring 5 octaves of handbells. We rehearse Sunday afternoons in the choir room from 5:30-6:15, but will change schedules to accommodate Bucs games. Always seeking new ringers and we play in service every 4-6 weeks.

Jubilation Ringers

This is the advanced handbell group. This group reads music well and plays level 3-5 music, ringing 5 octaves of handbells. Always seeking new ringers and good readers. We play in service every 4-6 weeks.
Rehearsals are Sunday in the choir room from 6:20-7:10, but we will change times according to Bucs games!

Instrumentalists

We are seeking fairly experienced players to share their skills in all three services. We often need instruments to accompany anthems and for offertory, communion and preludes. We have full orchestrations for many praise songs for the 9:30 service and would like to form ensembles for both traditional and contemporary worship. Children and youth are invited to play Christmas songs on their instruments prior to the 4:30 Family Christmas Eve Service.

Praise Bands

Voices in Praise - Adult

This is the adult contemporary praise band. VIP leads the singing of popular praise and worship music in the 9:30 contemporary service, often preparing 6-7 songs each week and staying current learning the latest offerings. It consists of a full rhythm section and 6 singers. All permanent positions are full, but we're always looking for alternates and experienced contemporary soloists. We also have orchestration for horns and woodwinds. We rehearse on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00.

Northwood also offers traditional worship services at 8:15 and 11 a.m. Nursery for babies and toddlers is available for all three services. And Sunday school for all ages is offered at 9:45 and 11 a.m.
